"The author of the Iliad is either Homer or, if not Homer, somebody else of the same name." Aldous Huxley

"I am returning this otherwise good typing paper to you because someone has printed gibberish all over it and put your name at the top."
An English Professor, Ohio University

Guess what! gzusfreek is not my name. Oh you knew that? Ok. Well, I'll get to the point. I've been thinking of looking for a pen name. This is something I have thought I'd never want/need, but at this time I desire one.

I used to use the name Kate Jordan when I worked for the airline. I used it for phone and mail correspondence. We had a customer base worldwide and they suggested it to keep you safe. I don't know if I like Kate Jordan. But who would I be?

One family genealogy, on my mother's side, shows a distant relation to Mark Twain. Should I use Che Clemens? What about Jeannetta Twain? Those don’t sound very mysterious or inviting. But how about initials: SK Clemens, RJ Twain?

That same genealogy showed distant relation to Mary, Queen of Scots. So, how about Mary Scots? Or MQ Scotts? I think I like Kate Jordan better.

I really like the names: Jessica, Jordin, Jordyce, Jaydin, and Angelica. Can we fit all these in? Actually I like Aldous Huxley but it's taken. . . his quote is above.

Well, I know this probably sounds silly. It’s 10:00 at night and I am sitting here with the flu just thinking and thinking. But I would invite any input you would be willing to humor me with!

I'd say go for it. When I was selecting mine, I wanted to keep it short. Easy to flow from the lips. Some say, get a name that's early in the alphabet for good book placement on shelves.

I took mine for sentiment (Lynn is a family name, Rush is another story...maybe I'll blog about it someday LOL).

Be sure to google your chosen name so it's not one of a porn star or something .. LOL

I use my real initials nd my maiden name. This way it's me, but at the same time, it's a pen name so in the evet my book is a major best-seller I still have a sense of anonymity, lol. I went with initials becuase I want to be an inkling like my idols -- JRR Tolkien and CS Lewis.

BTW, your blog layout's awesome!

***LynnR: Thanks for the advice! Easy flow, early alphabet, good things to think about. I died laughing about the porn star comment! It’s so true, eh? I never thought about it, but I should maybe run my characters by google, too! Hee Hee
***JC Lamont: Thank you too! I see a common denominator of family and sentimentality. My brain is ticking with names now! BTW, I feel “Prophecy of the Heir” will be a best seller! I know a bunch of us waiting to stand in line at midnight on the day of its debut! AND thanks for the layout complement! I have to say, you have been inspiration to me!

Howdy!
I think I already told you the story behind my pen name, but here it is again.

Avily was the name of my first character that I used to write stories about when I was a kid.

It's very special and sentimental to me, and since I made it up, it's not very common! :)

As for Jerome, I just liked it, and since my hubby wouldn't let me use it on any of our kids, I thought this would be a good way to use it.

I like the idea of having a pen name, because with everything about you available to everyone out there via the internet, it gives you one more step of separation from your personal life and your public life WHEN you're a rich, famous author.
