MOVIE MONDAY BATTLESTAR GALACTICA

BATTLESTAR GALACTICA
2004

Okay, I am taking online courses and have not been to the theater recently. I hope to see Avatar before it leaves the big screen. . .

Anyway, Netflix sent Battlestar Galactica, the miniseries that launched the 2004 TV series, this weekend.

mmmmMM.

Wonder why the alien robot created by humans always has to be a sexy blonde female hangin all over the villain. Why?

Why does the strong female always have to act like a guy, fight like a guy, and look like a guy? Just asking.

Well, one saving grace -- The one that made me stick with it and watch it all the way through -- Edward James Olmos. Love this guy. And, his portrayal of Commander Adama just endeared me to him all the more.

Commander Adama lost a son. His other son blames him for the brothers death. As the human race is on the brink of extinction, Commander Adama must take charge of the entire human future. EJO, as always, is believable and a genius. Loved this character.

I do have to warn about the idol worship in this story. They pray to the "gods of Kobol", a very new age type of worship. I didn't enjoy that at all. . .

I don’t have words to describe the soundtrack -- Lots of brilliant drums accompanying the space battles. I wonder if I can find it and buy it.

I did like the plot, and, of course, loved the sci fi cinematography.

I don't know that I will rent any more of this series. I think I have spent all the time I need to on the Battlestar Galactica.

Have you seen this? What do you think?

Oh yeah, gotta go see Avatar. :-)

I've not seen Battlestar Galactica yet. Sounds interesting, though.

I'm an old-school type-a gal.

I liked the old Battlestar Gallactica, where the cylons were more tin-cannish, Lorne Greene played Commander Adama and Richard Hatch and Dirk Benedict played Starbuck and Apollo.

Hmmmm...

I never was able to get into the newer SyFy version.

I did, however, like SyFy's "Warehouse 13." When is that going to be on again?

I never got into BG. I was a Trekkie through and through. I love individual sci-fi movies, but no series other than Star Trek ever captured my heart.

Hi KM,
Interesting to read your review after seeing the Battlestar Galactica trailer movie.

I'm actually a big BSG fan, though have to agree about Starbuck, she was a painful character. And they did over do it with the blonde Cyclon (I had to look away a few times.)

However, in all, I found the first three seasons especially, to be brilliant. They showed human nature as what it is, selfish and divisive, even when faced with extinction. The conflict between the characters was a central aspect of the show, in sharp contrast to Star Trek's message that we humans will naturally evolve beyond such pettiness. That cylons were hidden in human form throughout the fleet was another large part of the plot. Even the viewers did not know who they were.

As to the idols, it is based on the original BSG series. The gods of Kobol are real 'beings' in the BSG story, and there is a 13th god or 'being,' the Cyclon one. These 12 are at odds with the 13th, and this conflict is a backdrop hidden throughout the series. The Kobol religion was very paganistic with idols and eventually a dead end, while the Cylon god was extremely New Age, and the eventual victor. Throughout the series I was curious to see where they would take it.

As the series progresses, BSG presented many mysteries which were very difficult to piece together, again. Sadly, I thought they ruined season four, probably thanks to the writers strike.
