A GHOST STORY by KM Wilsher

THE HOLIDAY SERIES
OCTOBER a month of BLOODCURDLING SCREAMS and THE BIZARRE

A GHOST STORY by KM Wilsher

One summer night I watched a spine-chilling, horror film with a friend, and then drove home.

On the drive home, I laughed. Okay, I squealed like a baby. Zombie hitchhikers turned out to be trees, and glowing goblins reached out. Oh no, just road signs.

Then as I arrived in the driveway, my headlights twinkled through dark windows. I ground my teeth together and moaned, NO KEY! My roomate should have been home, but the absence of her car said she wasn’t.

The house my friend and I rented that summer sat in the middle of an eerie neighborhood. No neighbors. I mean, the 1930’s-style homes showed signs of inhabitants -- lawn chairs, live plants, garden hoses -- but no humans. Not once that summer did we see humans.

The spooky movie night was no different. From the driver’s seat of my muscle car, it's engine vibrating with a low rumble, I looked around -- Nothing stirred, except the light flickering in the one streetlight in a four block radius.

I was young and brave, a warrior princess chewing on my fingernails. I formulated a plan to “break and enter” my own home, then got out of the car and crept through the cool, ink-colored air searching the four sides of the house for an open window. The soundtrack of the scary movie earlier tickled the back of my mind causing my heart to beat faster and faster.

Then I couldn’t take it any longer. With a sudden snap, the warrior in me turned into white liver pansy. Panic mode turned on and I flexed my muscles to run. But before I hit full speed, something caught my eye. I noticed that the glass of the dining room window stood open just a little.

After composing my shaking innards, I took a deep breath and strolled through the flower bed. I had a hard time, but eventually the screen came off. Then with raw fingers, I lifted the pane. Proud of myself, I brushed my hands off and looked around. Shadows moved.

I took a quick step near the house, threw my hands on the ledge, and pulled my body into the window sill. While climbing through, balancing became tricky. I fell head over heels into the dining room table, and hit the floor with a thud. The impact caused the dishes on the side of the old metal sink to fall into the basin. Not knowing what had happened, images of séances and pentangles from the creepy movie filled my mind and I screamed.

My heart spasmed into a hypersonic rhythm, and I tried to throw my body back out the window. Again the shriek of the spooky movie orchestra filled my mind, and I froze, stupified, as a sudden brightness blinded me. The kitchen light flickered then blazed down into my eyes.

I blinked hard and pressed my fingers to my eyes. Once I focused, I discovered my roommate standing at the dining room door with a baseball bat in hand. Her eyes were as wide as Frisbees, her jaw hung open and her chest heaved.

Needless to say, within seconds we burst into sobbing laughter at our frightnight, impromptu, haunted house. I warned her not to loan her car to her boyfriend. At least not on the same nights as horror flicks. She warned me to give up breaking and entering, even if it was a place I paid rent.

I will say, that is one of the scariest things that ever happened to me!

How about you? Got any ghost stories?

MOVIE MONDAY the HOLIDAY SERIES

October the month for bloodcurdling screams and the bizarre
Movie Monday on the Holiday Series
HALLOWEEN WEEK

What movie chilled you to the bones? Turned your world upside down? Had you hanging on for dear life? Did you approach it on purpose?

The house of my youth had a ginormous lower level.

(gi•nor•mous Pronunciation: \jī-ˈnȯr-məs\
Function: adjective Etymology: gigantic + enormous
Date: circa 1948 : extremely large : HUMONGOUS)

It was easy to sneak down the stairs while everyone lay sleeping. One night, on the small television sitting near the sliding glass door, my cousins tuned into THE EXORCIST. We were 10-12 years old. I imagine we didn’t watch the whole thing, but it scared me senseless. I had nightmares for years. It is hands down the scariest thing I have ever seen.

What about you? Share with us the most terrifying movie you have ever seen?

Read below for my final post -- KM Wilsher reviews HAUNT OF JACKALS

My favorite things about HAUNT OF JACKALS?
I love the character, Cal Nichols. A fallen Nastarim. Imperfect. He lets his heart cloud his judgment, and he loses his position among the immortal due to the heat of passion. He is a father, guardian of the world, protector of the remaining Nastirim, and mentor to the upcoming Nastarim. Very relatable don’t you think? Cal is my favorite character.

Gina, Cal’s daughter, is the true main character. She spent many years without knowledge of her father. Her lonely childhood is riddled with abuse. As a rebel teenager she marries young and loses much. Just as Gina finds purpose for her life in the some orphans she cares for, she is yanked into this war between vampires and the followers of the Nazerene. Collectors vs. Nastarim. And her adopted son becomes the target for the worst of the Collectors, the Alkedama – the ones born of the blood of Judas Iscariot.

There was a lot going on in Haunt of Jackals. This may be the story’s Achilles heel. Sometimes I got lost. The Nastarim and the Collectors are a large group of many different powers and levels. I am not sure I ever understood them completely.

And, sometimes I felt like I was on a sightseeing tour. Little pieces of information kept popping up like those plaques in front of state monuments, giving me tiny bits of information. You know the ones with just enough of a story to make you want to know the whole story. Dracula, biblical history, Jewish folklore, salvation, archeology and theology they all darted in and darted out. I wanted to know more, but more would have been a tangent and not a fact to move the story forward.

I did like HAUNT OF JAKALS. After reading the first in JERUSALEM’S UNDEAD TRILOGY: FIELD OF BLOOD, I wasn’t sure I would, but I did. The story started to grab me, and I was invested.

If you like Horror, Haunt of Jackals is pretty creepy at times. These vamps are no Twilight, pretty boy, Brad Pitt, Interview-with -a-Vampire types.

If you like history and archeology, you’ll find some of both here.

I think there are some great discussions. Jesus Christ is alive throughout this book.

One time Cal describes church to Gina as – “a group getting together on Thursday night or going to the coast together for the weekend.” Giving the picture of a family – how the Church should be.
Gina has to answer questions about her own beliefs in a very contemporary, relevant way.

Hurray Eric Wilson - what a subtle, gentle, but very apparent inclusion of the Truth, the Way and the Life. This is one opinion, check out the tour below.

Over all, I’d say this book has a hook. I had tears at the end, and wished the next book was already on the shelf. The bumps are over now, and the story draws me in like a magnet gathers flecks of metal.

HAUNT OF JACKALS by Eric Wilson JERUSALEM'S UNDEAD TRILOGY

HAUNT OF JACKALS - My synopsis:

Born of the blood left behind by Judas Iscariot upon his death -- The Collectors. In most every way the Collectors resemble what we now call vampires. Immortal, living but dead. Passionate for the carnal, lust bursting from their undead flesh. Drinking the blood of the poor human victims, and tormenting as demons do.

Now, when Jesus rose from the grave he walked the earth, and at the same time, many others were raised. 36 of those humans raised from their dark slumber still walk the earth today. They are called the Nastarim. Human guardians of the world.

Thus the conflict between the blood suckers and the immortal protectors ensues. The goal of the Collectors is to speed up the coming of Armageddon by tormenting the children of God and helping humans give into the slavery of their flesh.

At the heart of the war between good and evil lies a battle between Natira, a Lead Collector, and Cal Nichols, a fallen Nastarim. Cal lost his position as one of the Nastarim the day he allowed himself to love a human woman. Natira killed Cal’s son, forcing Cal to now spend his energy hiding and protecting his daughter(and his adopted grandson) from the hungry vamp-demon. All the while Cal Nichols must continue his real purpose - protect the Nastarim and rid the earth of all collectors, especially Natira.

This book is bursting at the seams with stuff. History, geography, archeology, vampire legend, Jewish folklore, biblical history, Jesus, the Bible, faith, the New Testament, and little echoes from the Screwtape letters by CS Lewis. All this is interwoven into a tapestry of speculative fiction.

How can I touch on all that is going on in HAUNT OF JACKALS? It is impossible. The best I can do is give you a snapshot of what I think the plot looks like, and paint a picture of my favorite story lines. Come back tomorrow for more.

A little information about the author:

Eric Wilson has written nine novels.

I’ll just bet some of these will be surprises:

1.Haunt of Jackals
2. Field of Blood
3. Fireproof
4. Facing the Giants
5. Flywheel
6. A Shred of Truth
7. The Best of Evil
8. Expiration Date
9. Dark to Mortal Eyes

Have you seen the movie FIREPROOF? Probably. Have you seen FACING THE GIANTS? You really should. It is even better! Have you seen FLYWHEEL? It is not a Hollywood production, but rent it. You will be glad you did. I really liked it.

Eric Wilson seems to be on the cutting edge of Christian Fiction – screenplays and novels. His fiction is leading the way for many. I am happy to have read the first two books in his JERUSALEM’S UNDEAD TRILOGY. And as part of the CHRISTIAN SCIENCE FICTION AND FANTASY BLOG TOUR, I will be reviewing HAUNT OF JACKALS here the next few days.

Eric Wilson, a family man, was born stateside but spent many years traveling abroad with his parents, missionaries. I hear they even attempted to give out bibles behind the iron curtain. Most of what I read about Mr. Wilson says that he wanted to write from a young age. We are all glad he was given the chance. HAUNT OF JACKALS is just another package of proof.

Tune in tomorrow for my synopsis of HAUNT OF JACKALS.

MONSTER by Frank Peretti / THE HOLIDAY SERIES

THE HOLIDAY SERIES
OCTOBER the month for BLOODCURDLING SCREAMS AND THE BIZARRE
BOOK REVIEW
MONSTER by Frank Peretti

Suspense. Science Fiction. Speculative. Spirituality. Perretti’s MONSTER has it all.

My synopsis:
Reed, a police officer, leads his wife, Beck, into the Idaho wilderness. She is not the outdoorsy type, and he desires to teach her the important things in life. Strength. Survival. Living without a curling iron or pedicure.

At first, the hike up is uneventful. Beck is fit and seems to keep up with her husband pretty well. However, once they reach a cabin in the middle of a gorgeous canyon, their whole world turns upside down. Someone or 'something' has ripped the cabin to shreds. Strange creatures lurk the forest about them. Horrid noises and smells fill the night air. A body hangs from a tree, or at least part of it. Then Beck is abducted by a huge, hairy creature and disappears.

Separated, the couple has no idea whether the other is dead or alive. They must hold on to their Faith and their love for each other to endure. True survival. Reed’s love for his wife will not let him give up until he finds Beck, even if he dies during the search.

____________________
A synopsis cannot give you all the clues to the treasures that lay in this book. Again, Perretti gives me characters that I absolutely adore. Much of MONSTER reads like a CSI-like novel, but he incorporates some unique creatures, adding an almost horror-film-like thriller quality. MONSTER includes the argument of Darwinism and Creationism, and subtle pointers to Jesus Christ. (And at times not so subtle – but, beautifully done.)

Monster is a fun ride. The first couple chapters had me hooked in a way I hadn’t been in a long time. It did slow up, especially at the end, but I enjoyed the twists and surprises. I think this is my favorite Frank Perretti so far.

If you get the chance, pick up MONSTER by Frank Perretti – for sure.

Word Wednesday by KM Wilsher

This poor man called, and the LORD heard him; he saved him out of all his troubles.

— Psalm 34:6 (NIV)

While standing in the middle of the dark forest, sometimes I forget to remember that he has saved me. Saved me so many times in so many ways. And I forget that all those
“Worst things that could happen” never happen.

And if they ever do? He will save me. Psalm 34:6

Our church did a gift survey. You know, an assesment that helps identify your specific spiritual gifts. I was surprised that one of mine was Faith. I mean look at the above paragraph.

Have you ever done a Spiritual Gift Assesment?
What Gifts of the Spirit are strong in you?
