Star Trek #1, Monday Movie Review, Blog Days of Summer

BLOG DAYS OF SUMMER
MONDAY MOVIE REVIEW
- COUNT THEM DOWN WITH KM Wilsher
NUMBER ONE MOVIE OF SUMMER 2009
STAR TREK

We may have almost forgot that Star Trek was a summer movie. -- but save the best for first -- This is my favorite movie of the summer.

This movie was amazing. Eric Bana as Nero the Romulan villain. :*

A young McCoy, Scotty, Sulu, Chekov - It is an amusement park ride through a past with a changing future--- it never feels overdone!

Synopsis from Movie Web:
The incredible story of a young crew's maiden voyage onboard the most advanced starship ever created: the U.S.S. Enterprise. On a journey filled with action, comedy and cosmic peril, the new recruits must find a way to stop an evil being whose mission of vengeance threatens all of mankind.

The fate of the galaxy rests in the hands of bitter rivals. One, James T. Kirk (Chris Pine), is a thrill-seeking Iowa farm boy. The other, Spock (Zachary Quinto), was raised in a logic-based society that rejects all emotion. As fiery instinct clashes with calm reason, their unlikely but powerful partnership is the only thing capable of leading their crew through unimaginable danger . . .boldly going where no one has gone before!

First, I must confess I was not a diehard fan of Star Trek the television series. I watched episodes, but was really too young to appreciate it as a series.
Okay, it is the same for The Next Generation or Deep Space Nine. Again, I enjoyed many episodes but did not mark it on my calendar. I was, however, a big fan of the Star Trek movies - all 11! I'll never forget the Borg or the crew traveling through time. Some of my favorite science fiction.

I didn't know what to expect from Star Trek 2009. The set up/prologue was fair as it showed the death of Kirk's father and the roots of Captain’s name, James Tiberius Kirk. I loved the scene where a young Jim drives the car to the cliff. . .action at its best. But then suddenly I wanted to puke. The womanizing, drinking, brawling lost kid being invited to join the Starfleet Academy I put on my seatbelt anticipating cliché. That feeling subsided quickly though, as Jim Kirk does take some study/learning seriously.

I won't continue step by step through the movie, for, if you are reading beyond the spoiler banners you've probably seen the movie. I just have make sure to highlight one stand out scene. I think it is the most piercing and grand moments ever in Science Fiction Cinematography. It is near the end when the young Spock faces the older Spock from the future. I want you to know I do not cry easily, but this scene put a lump in my throat, tears stung my eyes. What wonderful thought to be able to go back and talk to your younger self -- especially for Spock when the "future is changing" --It was absolutely brilliant!
two spocks

IF you haven't seen it - Go see it! You'll be so glad you did :)

Not to be all "debbie downer", but if you have a freind on your mind. Haven't called them for a while. Just do it.

I wish I could have found the original song, but with all the bands we hung with, this just might be appropriate. My heart is with you and yours, Lisa.

BACK COVER BLURBS, BLOG DAYS OF SUMMER, by KM WILSHER

Today wraps up the BACK COVER BLURB articles on BLOG DAYS OF SUMMER. Of course summer isn’t over so BLOG DAYS OF SUMMER will continue, but this week wraps up BACK COVER BLURBS.

Though I stayed in the Sci Fi/fantasy genre I found a plethora of uniqueness. Two fantasy pieces based on the bible, a Science Fiction space opera, paranormal romance, swords and sorcery, pure medieval fantasy, two urban fantasies one with an archeological spin.

Below is a recap. A heartfelt thank you goes out to the authors who participated and to you who visited. My goal was to spotlight some brothers and sisters that can write. I had a lot of fun. Hope you did too.

BLOG DAYS OF SUMMER
SUMMER SONGS

Summer 1999
My nephew loved this song. I don’t know if he remembers. . .since he was seven. That summer he and I had to do a lot of driving. I was blessed to be his babysitter every Saturday while his mom worked and he and I had to get in the car a lot to get things done for the Church. We rocked this ‘sick’ song over and over. I think it is my number one PRAISE song EVER!

LYNN RUSH'S GUARDIAN, BLOG DAYS OF SUMMER by KM Wilsher

As promised the back cover for GUARDIAN by Lynn Rush

***

“Run, or you are going to die, too.” – It was an unconventional first greeting. But then again everything between Caleb, the 300-year-old Guardian of the city, and Olivia, the hip, out-of-control college co-ed, was destined to be unconventional.

***

Caleb Aspros and his team of Guardians have been charged with protecting young Olivia Cook. She’s a twenty-year-old free spirit who is somehow connected to the next immortal to join his team.

When Caleb first rescues her from evil’s grasp, feelings that have been dormant for three hundred years suddenly surface. But he knows immortals cannot pair with mortals. Or can they?

Caleb’s mortal enemy, four-hundred-year-old Judas Shakur, swoops in and tries to seduce young Olivia away from her protectors. Caleb will risk everything, including his immortality, to protect her.

BLOG DAYS OF SUMMER: BACK COVER BLURBS
________________________________________
As you know, I’m studying “back cover blurbs” and short one line synopses. The goal of this research started out egocentric -- I needed to know all I could about good summaries for back covers, in order to make my work in progress attractive.

As I realized I knew some pretty awesome writers, I got an idea. Why not share these great writers with everyone?

Okay, I could do a whole series on Lynn Rush. I featured her in the first weeks of this summer series, spotlighting her work LIGHT OF TRUTH. But I couldn't wrap up the summer without shining the light on my favorite work by Lynn Rush: GUARDIAN.

Lynn Rush, a great inspiration to me, writes paranormal romance that even the biggest sceptic (me) will love. Her voice is hip and light, but includes some angst and dark forces giving her stories vibrant color.

Charlie Hall on SUMMER SONGS, BLOG DAYS OF SUMMER by KM Wilsher

I have a list of "Summer Songs" that I've prepared for this series BLOG DAYS OF SUMMER.
Some tunes from the year I graduated, the year I was born. Some moshing from summer drives with my nephew, other melodies from my dark nights without Jesus. I had one for just about every summer of my life except 2009.
That is until last weekend while sitting in church worshiping with the saints. The band rocked this:

Nuff said ;) What are you listening to this summer, 2009?

I’m studying “back cover blurbs” and short one line synopses. The goal of this research started out egocentric really. I needed to know all I could about good summaries for back covers, because I want an outstanding back cover blurb for my work in progress.

As I thumbed through great synopses written by both published and unpublished writers, I realized I knew some pretty awesome writers. Thus the idea for this series was born. Why not share these great writers with everyone? Why not dive into conversations with the great writers I know and soak in the knowledge!

Jordis Unga performs Hoobastank The Reason Summer 2005
I’d never heard this song until summer 2005. I like the original from Hoobastank, but I will always love Jordis Unga (Rockstar INXS contestant Summer 2005) This song is almost spiritual to me. My Reason is Jesus. Jesus, my Reason is you.

COBRA CUTLASS by KM Wilsher

BLOG DAYS OF SUMMER
BACK COVER BLURBS

Here is the promised back cover blurb for COBRA CUTLASS:

Man that is hard. I Still don't like it, but here it is:

With her last breath, Maemi requested one thing from her husband, King Henry: Hide our baby boy.

An oracle warned that King Henry’s heir would be the key to a 1000 year reign by Henry’s descendants. Maemi knew that because of this prophecy, her son would be constantly hunted by demons and sorcerers both near and far.

King Henry complied with his love’s plea and kept their son’s existence a secret. Hiding the scion close, he told no one the heir's true identity, not even the boy himself.

A quarter of a century later. Maemi's fear is realized. Khoran of the Estuary, unexpectedly aligns himself with the evil Sorceress Evixen Mosk, and kidnaps King Henry as a offering to his new mistress of darkness.

Together, Khoran and Evixen will use every power they possess to uncover the identity of the scion and kill him.

Only one person stands in their way, JR, daughter of the Roans, who possesses her own kind of magic. But JR must discover her gift before she can discover the scion.

This week I decided to share my own. I wrote a short story, COBRA CUTLASS, and am now turning it into a novel. As I write this post, I'm in Sedona AZ with other fellow writers working on it.

So here is my one-liner for COBRA CUTLASS
